Van Dyke and New Cyanotype

Two Iron Salt Processes in Contact Printing – Masterclass with Peter Michels

This master class combines two iron-based processes that produce vastly different tonal ranges: the deep Prussian blue of the

New Cyanotype and the warm brown of the Van Dyke process

Mike Ware introduced the New Cyanotype in 1994 as a further development of John Herschel's classic two-component formula.

It achieves a high maximum density, an extended tonal range, and finely graded detail in shadows and midtones.

The Van Dyke process, developed in 1895, uses iron and silver and produces quickly visible results with a warm, rich image quality.

The focus is on exposure, contrast and tonal control, as well as water management and drying. All images are exposed using the contact printing process.

The small group of no more than five people works in Sebastiano Bucca's studio in Wettingen, focusing intently on their own paintings and taking plenty of time to do so.

The master class is designed for beginners as well as advanced students.

Digital image files can be sent in advance to the course instructor, who will use them to print the negatives. We also recommend the course “Creating Digital Film Negatives” on November 7, 2026.
