Creating Digital Film Negatives
Negatives for Fine Art Printing from Your Own Image Data – Photography Course with Peter Michels
Artistic printing processes such as cyanotype, salted paper, or gum printing are exposed by contact and therefore require a negative that is the same size as the final print.
The digital film negative (DFN) serves as a bridge to your own image file: A contact negative is created on the computer and placed directly onto the coated paper.
The workshop takes participants through the entire process—from black-and-white conversion and inversion to tone curves and UV correction layers, all the way to printing on film, tracing paper, or even hand-waxed printing paper.
Calibration tools such as Easy Digital Negatives and Digital Negative Studio are used, as are the simpler methods involving oil and wax negatives.
Anyone attending the masterclasses “Van Dyke and New Cyanotype” (November 21, 2026) or “Kallitype” (December 12, 2026) should bring the negatives they created here with them.
